What Does “Engage Your Core” Even Mean?

We’ve all heard it a million times in exercise class: “Engage your core! Engage your core!”
But what does that actually mean?
Think of pulling on a pair of freshly laundered jeans that are a little snug.
To fasten the button, you draw everything up and in—not sucking in your stomach, but hugging your midsection together for support.
That’s core engagement.
It’s your deep abs wrapping in like a built-in corset, giving you lift, stability, and control. Not holding your breath. Not clenching. Just zip, draw in, breathe, and move.
